Estimating the social and economic costs of tobacco use in Australia

The aim of the proposed work is to provide comprehensive and contemporary estimates of the social and economic costs of tobacco use in Australia for 2025, drawing on the best and most recently available data. The purpose of the work is to improve tobacco control regulation, policy and practice through providing accurate, transparent and accessible evidence on the broad impacts of tobacco. The team synergises the epidemiology and tobacco control expertise at ANU’s Centre of Epidemiology for Policy and Practice with complementary expertise at Cancer Council Victoria, the University of Sydney’s Cancer Elimination Collaboration and Cancer Council Queensland. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stream of this work will be undertaken by the Tobacco Free team at Yardhura Walani, the National Centre for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Wellbeing Research at ANU.
