Extreme wave events on the water surface

    Project: Research

    Project Details

    Description

A challenging problem in modern wave physics is to understand generation of giant, or rogue, waves found in the ocean and in optical fibers. This project led by internationally recognized experts aims at elucidating fundamental mechanisms responsible for the generation of extreme events in nonlinear capillary waves recently discovered by the authors. Laboratory studies of rogue waves are critical to our ability to predict and control probability of extreme wave events. The outcomes of the project will benefit Australia as one of the world leaders in nonlinear science and will result in breakthroughs in understanding of this new class of wave phenomena.
