From coherent to dissipative dynamics in complex quantum systems: Emerging new ideas from precision measurements of nuclear collisions

    Project: Research

    Project Details

    Description

This is the world's first program to investigate the physical mechanisms causing loss of coherence in nuclear collisions, using new instrumentation to make complementary measurements of quantum tunnelling and scattering. Capitalizing on Australia's research strengths in experimental nuclear physics and fundamental quantum theory, this project aims to trigger a paradigm shift in our understanding of nuclear reactions, resolving long-standing anomalies in the field. It provides a unique new opportunity to investigate dissipation and quantum decoheremce in complex quantum systems, and has implications for element formation in violent cosmic environments.
