From crust to core: probing the heterogeneity of the Earth with seismic arrays

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

Signal enhancement using arrays of seismic recorders will provide information on fine scale structure that cannot be directly imaged, yet is vital for reconciling geophysical and geochemical views of the Earth. Novel methods linking adaptive stacking, 3-component analysis and multiple arrays will be used to exploit different facets of the seismic wavefield to provide structural controls on heterogeneity, caused by dynamic processes, in the mantle and near the core-mantle boundary. Information extracted on shallow features in the neighbourhood of the array will yield valuable insight into the structure and composition of the Australian lithosphere.
