Hofmeister at Work. Implementation of a paradigm shift in Physical Chemistry

    Project: Research

    Project Details

    Description

The physical chemistry of solutions and colloids is an enabling discipline that underlies chemical engineering, environmental and biosciences. The classical theories ignore ubiquitous specific ion (Hofmeister) effects and are flawed and lack predictability. The project takes foundation work on ion polarisabilities and ionic interactions to build a new predictive theory. It will be applied to colloidal, protein and biomembrane interactions in electrolytes, to pH, buffers, surface potentials and ion binding. The results will be tested against experiment. They will be presented in a form comprehensible to non technical users, and quantitatively for physical and colloid chemists and chemical engineers.
