Project Details
Description
A spectrometer will be constructed to measure the electric and magnetic fields immediately surrounding excited atomic nuclei that have been implanted into solids. By measuring these fields, a broad range of interdisciplinary problems will be investigated at the interface of nuclear physics, solid-state physics and the physics of energetic ion-solid collisions. Rapid dynamic effects associated with ion implantation, which cannot be measured directly by other means, will be studies with highest priority to resolve open questions about the implantation and radiation damage processes. The new spectrometer is needed to provide sample temperature variation and efficient data collection.
