Identifying the transition from hunting to animal management in mainland and Island Southeast Asia: Origins, impacts and proxies for human migration

    Project: Research

    Project Details

    Description

The aim of this project is to use a combination of animal bone analysis and ancient genetics for the first time to identify the origins and direction of dispersal of a range of domestic animals from the mainland and into Island Southeast Asia. It will also assess the long term impacts of human landscape modifications and the introduction of domesticated animals and other invasive species on native island faunal communities. This represents a pivotal moment in the prehistory of the region, at which time the foundations for the development of the contemporary economic systems of Australia's neighbours were established.
