International coalitions for climate change mitigation: the role of carbon market linkages and trade restrictions

This project investigates how coalitions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions could be formed and maintained among countries. It will examine mechanisms that could support climate change cooperation, in particular the role of carbon market linkage, and trade policy including the threat of trade restrictions. It will do this using cooperative game theory, implementation theory and agent-based modelling. Particular emphasis will be on the potential for coalitions in the Asia-Pacific region that involve Australia. The research will help us understand how climate change mitigation could be achieved in a fragmented world, where agreements are struck among different groups of countries rather than in a global forum.
