Description
The growth and replication of the malaria parasite, within the red blood cells of its human host, is reliant on membrane proteins which move ions such as potassium, sodium and chloride into and out of the parasite, as well as the infected blood cell. These ion transport proteins may well be good antimalarial drug targets but our knowledge of their identity and their physiological roles is rudimentary. The aim of this work is to obtain a detailed understanding of the ion transport physiology of the malaria parasite and to identify some of the proteins involved. The project will increase our understanding of the fundamental biology of a major human pathogen.
