Languages of Barrier Islands, Sumatra: Description, History and Typology

The Asia-Pacific, especially Indonesia, continues to be a region of strategic interest for Australian public and private sector leaders in areas of public policy, security and the economy. This project will generate significant new intellectual resources on past and present languages, cultures and societies of the region, which is crucial for educating existing and next-generation Australians working in the region. Practical outcomes include language grammars, and public digital databases of fieldwork findings, encompassing language corpora, lexical databases (for bilingual dictionaries), and audio-visual resources underpinning cultural revitalisation. In effect, this project will bolster Australias research capacity in Asia-Pacific and Indonesian studies, support the training of Australian graduates as researchers, policymakers and diplomats of the Asia Pacific region now and into the future, and enable productive Australia-Indonesia partnerships at multiple lev
