Project Details
Description
In recent years, one of the most exciting new areas of interest to Earth scientists is the interaction of magma with the deep oceans. A newly discovered frontier is the submarine realm of arcs. In this environment, many of the world s biggest ore deposits form, and submarine volcanic emissions dramatically affect the composition of the oceans and atmosphere, the organisms that reside around the deep sea volcanic vents, and global sulfur and carbon budgets. We will study quenched volcanic glasses from these environments to identify the way metals and volatiles are lost into the oceans. To quantify the processes involved, we will conduct experimental simulations using state of the art analytical equipment.
