Mapping the microscopic pathway to dissipation in quantum nuclear collisions

    Project: Research

    Project Details

    Description

This project will investigate the microscopic quantum mechanisms resulting in a smooth transition from coherent quantum superposition to irreversible dissipative outcomes. Our new ideas allow this critical transition, missing in quantum models of nuclear collisions, to be addressed by peripheral transfer reaction measurements using Australia's new accelerated radioactive isotope capability. Development of a true predictive model will help direct future applications of major international radioactive isotope accelerators under construction worldwide. We will explore opportunities to apply the exquisite selectivity of our experimental techniques to a persistent problem in the model of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis: the low observed Li-7 abundance.
