Memory and light for integrated quantum systems

    Project: Research

    Project Details

    Description

Experimental quantum mechanics has moved beyond demonstrations of fundamental physics. Research is now dealing with real-world applications of quantum effects. Foremost amongst these are quantum key distribution, which allows transmission of data with security ensured by Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle; and quantum logic gates that could be applied to quantum computing, which would lead to a revolution in information processing. The aims of this fellowship are to develop two enabling technologies: quantum memory and quantum light sources that can be integrated into fibre communication systems and photonic quantum logic systems. These technologies will allow long distance quantum cryptography and higher density quantum photonic systems.
