Project Details
Description
This project will encompass a range of molecular biological approaches to determine whether isolates of VZVobtained from zoster patients with or without PHN differ with respect to their capacity to infect, replicate or spread in ganglionic cells. We will investigatecellular responses following HSV infection and VZV infection of human ganglionic cells with PHN and non-PHN VZV isolates, focusing on markersassociated with neuropathic pain and key cytokine/chemokine responses. This project will provide important new insights into both VZV and HSV infectionof sensory neurons, including how they differentially affect the cell type that is their natural target of latency and reactivated infection.
