New directions for nuclear structure research in Australia

    Project: Research

    Project Details

    Description

New techniques and novel infrastructure will be developed for the study of exotic nuclei far from stability, enhancing the unique program of nuclear structure research based at the Australian Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility and establishing new directions of research aimed at solving both practical and fundamental problems in nuclear science. The Solenogam spectrometer is a novel device that will be developed locally with unique capabilities not available elsewhere. Other new initiatives investigating neutron-rich nuclei will provide information critical for testing models of stellar nucleosynthesis as well as key data on nuclei that have been identified by the IAEA as important for the safe operation of next generation nuclear reactors.
