Project Details
Description
This project will establish new observational constrains on rupture of the Sumatra megathrust during the sequence of giant earthquakes that occurred there during 2004-2007. Such constraints will help elucidate the physics of earthquake fault rupture and tsunami generation, thereby enhancing our ability to forecast the size, frequency and impact of future megathrust earthquakes in Sumatra and elsewhere. The proposed research will result in the development of new techniques for the characterisation of earthquake sources that can contribute to next generation tsunami warning systems, and for tsunami modelling that will provide fundamental improvements in our ability to estimate tsunami inundation for hazard mapping.
