    Project: Research

    Project Details

    Description

Tibet is the object of multiple competing discourses by the Peoples Republic of China, the Tibetan exile government, and their respective supporters around the world. This project will examine how each of them attempts to define the parameters and discourses of legitimate Buddhist belief and practice in official publications, Internet sites, competing cultural performance troupes, and popular films and documentaries. It will focus on the sorts of language and images these groups deploy and the reflexive nature of their productions of Tibet. The goal will be to examine their strategies in creating particular versions of Tibet and the socio-political purposes for which these are used.
