Precision inertial sensing with cold atoms

    Project: Research

    Project Details

    Description

Ultra-cold atoms offer vastly improved sensitivity over current technology for many precision measurement applications. In this proposal, we will apply the fundamental advances we have made in recent years in the development of cold atom sources to produce state of the art inertial sensors to sense acceleration, rotation and gravity. The proposal will allow us to move our fundamental research into an applied context. The sensors we will produce will find application to navigation both in defense and civilian contexts, to mineral exploration, to earth science and to fundamental physics.
