Productive and Climate Resilient Eucalypt Germplasm for Indigenous Forestry in Northern Australia

    Project: Research

    Project Details

    Description

Northern Australia's forestry sector stands at a pivotal juncture, with Tiwi Plantations Corporation's (TPC) 30,000-hectare Eucalyptus pellita plantation on Tiwi Islands set to become the region's largest eucalypt estate. This project's rationale stems from the urgent need to develop climate-resilient, high-performing plantations that support Indigenous-led forestry and bolster the sector's economic viability. The overarching aim is to operationalise an advanced breeding and deployment program, leveraging international expertise to create a world-class, climate-adapted genetic resource for Northern Australia. Currently there are no tree improvement initiatives for this species in Australia.
