Reconstruction of Anoxic and Toxic Conditions in Australian Lakes and Ancient Oceans

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

Oxygen is the key element for aquatic life. This project reconstructs the oxygen distribution in past aquatic systems using newly discovered biomarker molecules. Three outstanding problems are addressed: the possible existence of anoxic, sulfidic and toxic oceans 1,800 to 800 million years ago; the role of oxygen in the evolution of multicellular life; and the impact of human settlement on the intensity of cyanobacterial blooms, eutrophication and anoxia in Australian lakes and estuaries.
