Reforming the Male: Masculinity, Medicalisation and Men's Health

    Project: Research

    Project Details

    Description

Increased medical and cultural scrutiny of the male body and male behaviour has produced new forms of masculinity which have significant consequences for men's physical and psychological wellbeing. This project examines contemporary medicalised masculinity through four case studies of problems of maleness : ADHD; depression; body image disorders; and sexual dysfunction. It addresses an issue which has not yet been examined in depth: the relationship between the widespread notion of a crisis in masculine identity, medical discourses and the increased role of pharmacology in enhancing people s lives and improving their productivity and performance. Major outcomes will be a book manuscript and several journal articles.
