Rethinking Impartial Humanitarianism: Lessons from the Recent History of the Asia-Pacific Region

In the context of intense global debate about the future of humanitarian action, this project re-examines the key concept of "impartial humanitarianism" in historical context. Newly declassified archival material will be used to elucidate how the principles of impartial humanitarianism have been applied to the protection of civilian detainees and displaced people in the Asia-Pacific region. By exploring the changing and often contradictory definition and application of these principles, the project will create a deeper understanding of the practice of humanitarianism, thus contributing to the search for more effective approaches to the relief of suffering in the contemporary world.
