Rogue waves in oceans and optical fibers

    Project: Research

    Project Details

    Description

The CIs of this proposal are world experts on the theory of rogue waves. We intend to resolve the remaining mysteries of rogue waves in the oceans and in optical fibres. The theory of rogue waves will be supported with experimental studies in photonic crystal fibres, as these are presently known to generate optical rogue waves. Modelling and observing them in optics is the simplest way to gain experimental results. Understanding the concept of rogue waves in optics will help us to have a deeper view of extreme waves in oceans, thus potentially allowing us to prevent deadly events involving large ships.
