Description
In order to explore the feasibility of carbon sequestration and trading with PNG smallholder coffee and cocoa producers, four key questions need to be addressed. These are:1. What are the baseline rates of carbon sequestration in traditional and non-traditional coffee and cocoa production systems in PNG?2. Which governance models will facilitate the successful establishment of robust carbon sequestration and crediting programs for tree crops in the PNG context?3. What incentives will encourage businesses to integrate carbon neutrality into supply chains?4. What tools and training are needed to prepare smallholders to farm carbon? This project will examine these four questions in order to explore the viability of carbon sequestration and trading as an approach to increasing income for smallholder farmers. The project is designed as an action learning activity, with a case study project established to trade carbon in a coffee industry setting.
