Description
There is widespread dissatisfaction with the results in terms of unemployment and poverty of the Indian economic reforms program begun in 1991. In this context the 2005 National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) is the most significant Indian social policy initiative in the last decade. The proposed research will evaluate the performance of the NREGA and another social policy the Public Distribution System. It will provide insights into the sustainability of the reforms and how a democratic polity should address persistent poverty. The results will also have substantial implications for the design of AusAID s anti-poverty interventions in other countries.
