Project Details
Description
Stars give us light and they synthesise the elements necessary for planet formation and life. This project will produce the most detailed simulations of star formation in the early Universe after the Big Bang, and in galaxies today. The outcomes will advance our understanding of cosmic structure formation, providing key input for Australian and international research on galaxies, stars and planets. It contributes to at least 3 of the 6 Big Questions in the Astronomy Decadal Plan 2016-2025, expanding knowledge in the physical sciences, and driving the next generation of large Australian facilities and frontier technologies. It advances methods that unlock interdisciplinary research and new collaborations within Australia and worldwide, in particular in chemical modelling, high-performance computing, and plasma physics. This project is timely as it will make efficient use Australia's new and most powerful supercomputer 'Gadi'. A key benefit of the project is to train
