Stealth for Atoms: Tune-out Wavelengths to Test Quantum Electrodynamics

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

The project aims to measure with great accuracy the tune-out and magic wavelengths for helium to challenge quantum electrodynamics (QED) - arguably the best-tested theory in modern physics. This laboratory has developed a novel, highly sensitive technique to measure the potential confining ultracold atoms which, combined with high accuracy wavelength determination, will enable measurements of unprecedented precision. The collaboration with world-leading theorists will enable the project to push the boundaries of theory and experiment to below the part per million level to test QED. This will advance our fundamental understanding of atomic structure, and yield new insights with potential benefits to, for example, more accurate atomic clocks.
