    Project: Research

    Project Details

    Description

Garbage collection innovation is challenging because of the extreme difficulty of engineering a high performance GC from scratch. Impediments to innovation impact product development directly because innovation is costly and indirectly because serendipitous discoveries by academia will rarely arise if the cost of working in that environment is high. This project will develop a port of the new MMTk garbage collection framework to the V8 runtime. The existence of the port will greatly lower the barrier to innovation for researchers, both from academia and industry. Furthermore, because MMTk includes multiple collectors and serves multiple runtimes, innovations in other contexts will be easy to evaluate within V8, greatly reducing the cost of exploring the efficacy of new ideas as they emerge from the memory management community. The project is principally development work, not research, but it is a significant research enabler.
