Description
Structural transitions in two-dimensional turbulent systems is of key importance for understanding and predicting many natural and laboratory phenomena in planetary atmospheres, oceanic flows, and magnetised plasma. Recently the authors of this proposal found evidence in support of the universality of physical mechanisms leading to transitions from chaos to order in plasma and fluid turbulence. This project is the first cross-disciplinary study of the universality, and of the dynamics of structural transitions in fluids and plasma. It will greatly contribute to predicting the behaviour of turbulent systems and to developing novel methods of turbulence control.
