Surrogate ecology: When and where can it work to improve environmental management?

    Project: Research

    Project Details

    Description

Surrogates are used in all ecosystems worldwide but their application is contentious and problematic with major knowledge gaps about which kinds of surrogates work best under what conditions. In this Research Program, the science underpinning surrogate use will be transformed using a powerful combination of quantitative ecology, new ecological theory, and ecological synthesis to give it a new level of rigour and focus. Through mentoring and training, a dynamic new group of researchers will develop surrogate ecology as a means of significantly improving the effectiveness of environmental management and biodiversity conservation and establish world-leadership in this area of science.
