Targeting amino acid transport to treat type 2 diabetes

    Project: Research

    Project Details

    Description

Long-term nutrient overload is a common cause of type 2 diabetes. It fosters insulin resistance and stresses beta-cells in the pancreas. Thus reducing nutrient overload could be used to treat type 2 diabetes. The applicant has shown that blocking neutral amino acid uptake in the intestine increases insulin sensitivity and reduces stress on beta cells. The proposal is to develop inhibitors of neutral amino acid uptake in the intestine as potential novel drugs to treat type 2 diabetes.
