Project Details
Description
This project aims to produce a framework for analysis of the ultra-long sentences known as clause chains in diverse Asia-Pacific and other languages, and to investigate for the first time the processing of these extraordinary, widespread sentences by adults and children. The intent is to achieve pioneering results in syntactic typology, cognitive processing, and acquisition of clause chains, through cross-linguistic analysis and experimentation. Anticipated outcomes are enhanced models of language structure, mental processing of language, and brain functions. Understanding of drastically-different sentence types in the worlds languages will further benefit foreign language learners, machine translators, and immigrants learning English.
