Project Details
Description
Australian shipwrecks are submerged heritage sites rich in history, yet under severe threat from natural and human impacts. Focusing on the Clarence, a significant colonial trader, we will develop a world-class strategy for the reburial and in-situ preservation of wrecks at risk. Our team brings together the disciplines of behavioural archaeology, maritime archaeology, conservation sciences and maritime objects conservation. Our overarching theoretical focus will be shipwreck site formation models and the potential of wooden historic wrecks and assemblages to elucidate early colonial history and shipbuilding. Our work will be critical to the development of new national policy and technical guidelines for site managers of historic wrecks.
