The Formation and Evolution of Galaxies: Breaking Ground with New Australian Technology

    Project: Research

    Project Details

    Description

This proposal will utilize the recent major advances in Australian optical and infrared integral field technology to generate an unparalleled understanding of how galaxies like our Milky Way formed shortly after the Big Bang and evolved into the dynamical universe that surrounds us today. This research will employ massive clusters of nearby galaxies to form nature's largest telescopes to view the early universe in unprecedented detail and magnification. These observations will allow us to (1) gain a deep understanding of the processes responsible for galaxy formation and evolution for the first time, and (2) build the skills required to fully exploitAustralia's $65M stake in the future Giant Magellan Telescope.
