Project Details
Description
This project builds on our advanced theoretical and computational work to develop realistic physics-based models of the dusty discs encircling young stars. These discs are the locations where planets form and are the launch points for dramatic outflows. Our work will replace the conventional, simplified prescription for modelling protostars with a new paradigm solidly based upon theoretical analysis and supercomputer simulations of radiative and magnetic phenomena in partially ionised gases. Our models will shed light on the environment and processes of star and planet formation, and will allow rigorous interpretation of accurate data from new facilities such as Gemini and the Atacama Large Millimetre Array.
