The role of online social networks in successful ageing: benefitting from 'who you know' at older ages

    Project: Research

    Project Details

    Description

Social networks are fundamental to humans, increasing well-being and life expectancy. Social networking increasingly takes place online via Web 2.0 technology, for example, Facebook. The need to maintain social networks increases in older age. This ground-breaking project aims to provide new insights into the generational digital divide, and increase understanding of how online social networking contributes to successful ageing in terms of partnering, economic and voluntary activity, and social and family connectedness. Findings will inform policy and education programs aimed at increasing older people s computer literacy and their use of online networking to enhance their well-being, with social and economic benefits to the community.
