The standard quantum limit and beyond collaboration

    Project: Research

    Project Details

    Description

Although the Heisenberg uncertainty principle is a well known and widely taught physical law, it sets a limit the Standard Quantum Limit (SQL) - that has never been reached in the measurement of a macroscopic object. The SQL limits the sensitivity with which a force acting on a macroscopic body can be detected using coherent light. Reaching, and then surpassing, the SQL is therefore of fundamental interest. It will not only expand the experimental field of quantum measurement technology, but will also enable physical measurements of unprecedented sensitivity, leading to a better understanding of fundamental processes, advancing knowledge whilst developing technological innovations - a National Research Priority for Australia
