Project Details
Description
This project adopts a social change orientation to investigate and report on a contemporary disease of modernisation, obesity. Cultural economy audits of social trends plus an extensive interview program enquiring into the practices of socially situated individuals, will illuminate the reasons for the changing social pattern of obesity. We add the historical, structural and experiential dimensions to an issue that is usually reduced to behavioural risk factors. A structure-agency perspective informs the whole study, and extends to an examination of the societal response to an earlier disease of modernisation, coronary heart disease, and what we can learn for obesity mitigation.
