Thomas Griffith Taylor (1880-1963): A Geographer's Vision of Man and Nature in the Twentieth Century

    Project: Research

    Project Details

    Description

Australian geographer Thomas Griffith Taylor (1880-1963) boldly explored many of the 20th century s key concerns: race; nationalism; migration; environment; world conflict. This project aims to use Taylor s work to historicise 20th century conceptions of the quintessential modern question: what is Man s relationship to Nature? By focusing on the significance of gender and colonialism in Taylor's published writings and personal papers, and by analysing his graphics, this project will produce the first comprehensive study of an influential Australian intellectual, who lived through global shifts from colonisation, to nationalism and internationalism, and made these phenomena his chief objects of scholarly inquiry.
