19th-century Australians were avid novel readers, especially - due to the cheap price and availability of colonial periodicals - in serial form. Such publications included novels by Australian authors, but the vast majority were by British and American writers. Very little is known about the content or colonial circulation and reception of these overseas novels. This project combines innovative digital methods with established literary critical approaches to identify and analyse the world of novels in colonial periodicals. It explores how Australian literary and cultural history shift when situated in their transnational context, and how British and American literary history alter when colonial circulation and reception are incorporated.
