Travelling objects: art and cultural diplomacy

    Project: Research

    Project Details

    Description

This project investigates questions about cross-cultural communication that are raised when many copies of certain art objectsprints or medalsexist in distant lands across the globe. It does so through a study of diplomatic gifts sent from France to other countries in Europe, Asia, and the New World in the early-modern period. Expected outcomes of this project include new digital methods for the analysis of cultural networks, and advanced theories for understanding local cultural identity in an increasingly connected world. Addressing the challenges of globalisation, this project fosters collaboration with the government and corporate sectors to develop a better understanding of the role of art in cultural diplomacy.
