Description
This proposal aims to fully understand, and hence provide the means to manipulate and reliably control, the electric domain structure of promising ferroelectric materials on the sub-micronmetre down to the nanometre scale. This is significant as it will enable the fabrication and use of patterned ferroelectric domain arrays for a wide range of potential new device applications. Two prototype domain patterned grating arrays and a new approach to the growth of nanostructured material arrays onto pre-patterned ferroelectric surfaces are anticipated to be developed for targeted nonlinear integrated optical device applications. These novel optical devices will be building blocks for future high speed information and communications technology.
