Description
Why some molecular compounds crystallise in different polymorphic forms while others do not is a question of fundamental importance, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry. We will use our world-leading diffuse X-ray scattering and computer-modelling methods to probe the local structure and dynamics of different polymorphs to give a picture of how molecules interact and behave in a level of detail not previously achievable. An ability to predict, understand and control polymorphism will lead to more efficient production of pharmaceuticals (and other important materials such as pigments, dyes and explosives) and enhance the establishment and protection of patents. This work will provide valuable insights into how this may be achieved.
