Description
Indigenous peoples have repeatedly called for greater accountability in research relationships through return of archival materials but guidance on how to do this in line with Torres Strait Islander priorities and protocols is lacking. This project responds to this issue by conducting extensive fieldwork with Torres Strait Islanders to return and reinterpret 50 year old Japanese scholarship about Torres Strait Islander society and culture. Outcomes include the co-creation of high-quality digital resources for communities, academics and the general public and clear guidelines in research conduct and return of materials to Torres Strait Islanders. Advances are expected in digital methodologies for practical research engagement and grounded insights into respectful research relationships that support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander empowerment.
