Project Details
Description
Wardaman is a highly endangered language of the mid-Northern Territory of Australia: only two full speakers, both elderly, remain. This project aims, first, to extend an existing wordlist into full dictionary and second, to create a multi-level, interlinearized and glossed narrative collection. Biographical, mythological, historical narratives, and place-linked song will be recorded from the full speakers (brother and sister) in audio and video formats. Some documentation will take place at locations in Wardaman country (characterized by rich rock art and riverine environment). This work is urgent. It will provide material useable by a community of Wardaman descendants.
