    Abstract

Chapter 17 of The Story of the Stone is a somewhat neglected chapter, which actually hints at the theme of the novel. On the surface, this chapter is about the brilliant poetical achievements of the hero Jia Baoyu, in sharp contrast with his father and his literary gentlemen who are not suitable for composing poems. On a much deeper level, their dialogues are closely connected with heaps of hints to the fate and destiny of the three major female characters in the novel, namely, Lin Daiyu, Xue Baochai and Li Wan. The author is trying to offer a glimpse into their tragedies due to each of their attitude and entanglement in the contradiction between emotions and etiquettes. Chapter 17 is therefore a brilliant hidden thread of the plot to help readers understand the sensitivity and empathy of the hero.
