Abstract

The differences and relative merits between the two complete English translations of Dream of the Red Chamber by David Hawkes and Yang Xianyi can, to a large extent, be attributed to the variations and strengths of their source texts. Hawkes based his translation on the 1964 edition published by the People's Literature Publishing House, yet he frequently diverged from the Cheng-Yi version, opting instead for texts from the Zhiyan Zhai commentary lineage. The successes and shortcomings in his process of selection, adaptation, and omission offer valuable insights for reference.
