Abstract
This short article explains why David Hawkes chose The Story of the Stone rather than Red Chamber Dream for the most famous classical Chinese novel in the 1970s. There are three reasons: 1. The color red in English is not easy to convey the similar cultural significance in Chinese; 2. The Story of the Stone has at least five different meanings; 3. David Hawkes played a private joke in the English title that he chose.
