Abstract
This article explains the discoveries made through bilingual reading of both the Chinese original and the English translation of David Hawkes' The Story of the Stone. By putting both texts together in a meticulous close reading, we can understand why David Hawkes chose certain methods to echo to the game that the original author Cao Xueqin was playing in Hongloumeng. This sheds light on what an effective literary translation should be like and what functions it should play.
