Abstract

How to hit a triple: The title hydrocarbon, one of the most π-bond-rich small molecules, has been synthesized and characterized for the first time. This highly reactive hydrocarbon undergoes a new diene-transmissive, triple Diels-Alder cycloaddition sequence to form six new C-C bonds and the fused tricyclic phenalene ring system in one step. Controlled single additions have also been achieved.
